What Is Taichi
Taichi, also known as Tai Chi Chuan, is a traditional Chinese martial art that combines slow, flowing movements with deep breathing and mental focus. At SJF Kung Fu School, we teach Taichi as a complete system for developing body, mind, and spirit. Our school is led by Master Shen Jiangfei, the 11th-generation inheritor of Chen-style Taichi, which is the oldest and most original of the five primary family styles. Master Shen grew up in a martial arts family and has dedicated decades to preserving these authentic teachings. Unlike commercial schools that simplify or water down the art, we maintain the full traditional forms and philosophies passed down through generations. Our international students from Germany, the UK, the United States, and many other countries have experienced the depth of our training firsthand. Taichi is often called "meditation in motion." But at SJF, it is much more than that. It is a practical martial art, a health practice, and a philosophical system all in one. The slow, graceful movements you see are actually powerful techniques for generating internal energy, improving balance, and developing self-defense skills. When you learn Taichi with us, you are not just copying movements---you are understanding the meaning and application behind each posture.

The Philosophy Behind Taichi
Taichi is rooted in Daoist principles of balance and harmony. The practice teaches you to balance opposing forces—soft and hard, fast and slow, stillness and movement. These principles are not abstract concepts but practical tools you apply in every movement. Master Shen explains these ideas in simple terms, helping you experience the philosophy directly in your body.
The concept of Yin and Yang comes alive in your practice. Every Taichi movement contains both Yin and Yang qualities. You learn to feel the transition between emptiness and fullness, relaxation and power, yielding and attacking. This understanding transforms your practice from mere exercise into a living philosophy.
Taichi teaches you to follow nature's rhythm. The movements mimic natural patterns like flowing water, swaying trees, and circling birds. By aligning your practice with these natural principles, you learn to move with less effort and greater efficiency. This natural approach reduces strain and makes your practice more sustainable.
The practice cultivates both inner and outer strength. Taichi develops physical strength, flexibility, and endurance while simultaneously building mental clarity, emotional balance, and spiritual awareness. This holistic development is what makes Taichi a complete system rather than just a workout.
Physical Training in Taichi
Build strength through slow, controlled movements. The slow pace of Taichi requires sustained muscle engagement that builds strength without heavy weights or high impact. Your legs develop stability, your core becomes stronger, and your arms gain endurance. This type of strength supports your body without straining your joints.
Improve flexibility through full-range movement. Taichi takes your body through its complete range of motion, improving flexibility in your spine, hips, shoulders, and knees. The gentle stretching and twisting movements release tension and increase mobility, making daily activities easier and more comfortable.
Develop coordination and body awareness. Taichi movements require precise coordination between your hands, feet, and body. This practice improves your proprioception—your sense of where your body is in space. Better coordination reduces your risk of falls and injuries in daily life.
Enhance your balance through weight shifting. Taichi trains you to shift your weight smoothly and maintain stability on one leg. This skill is essential for both martial arts and everyday activities. Improved balance gives you confidence and reduces your risk of falling as you age.

Mental and Emotional Benefits
Reduce stress and anxiety through mindful practice. The focused attention required for Taichi practice gives your mind a break from constant thinking. Students often describe feeling calmer and more centered after practice. This stress reduction benefits your mental health and overall quality of life.
Improve your focus and concentration. Taichi requires you to pay attention to your movements, breath, and body alignment simultaneously. This multitasking develops your ability to concentrate, a skill that transfers to work, study, and other activities requiring mental focus.
Develop emotional resilience and stability. Regular Taichi practice helps you respond to life's challenges with greater calm and clarity. You learn to breathe through difficult emotions rather than reacting impulsively. This emotional stability is one of the most valuable benefits of long-term practice.
Find mental clarity and peace of mind. The meditative quality of Taichi practice clears mental clutter and creates space for insight. Many students find that solutions to problems arise naturally during or after practice. This mental clarity is a welcome benefit in our information-saturated world.
Taichi for Self-Defense
Learn the martial applications behind each movement. Every Taichi posture has a practical combat purpose. Master Shen teaches you how the slow forms translate into effective self-defense techniques, including joint locks, strikes, and throws. Understanding these applications gives depth to your practice and builds genuine confidence.
Develop the skill of redirecting force. Instead of meeting aggression with aggression, Taichi teaches you to redirect your opponent's energy. This skill allows you to defend yourself effectively without relying on size or strength. It is a practical approach that works for practitioners of all body types.
Practice Push Hands to develop sensitivity and timing. Push Hands is a partner exercise that trains your ability to feel and respond to your partner's energy. This practice develops reflexes, balance, and the ability to maintain your stability while disrupting your opponent's.
Build confidence without aggression. Taichi self-defense is based on control and efficiency, not violence. This approach builds genuine confidence without encouraging aggression. Knowing you can protect yourself if needed changes how you carry yourself and interact with others.
