What Is Taichi
Taichi, also known as Tai Chi Chuan, is a traditional Chinese martial art that combines slow, flowing movements with deep breathing and mental focus. At SJF Kung Fu School, we teach Taichi as a complete system for developing body, mind, and spirit. Our school is led by Master Shen Jiangfei, the 11th-generation inheritor of Chen-style Taichi, which is the oldest and most original of the five primary family styles. Master Shen grew up in a martial arts family and has dedicated decades to preserving these authentic teachings. Unlike commercial schools that simplify or water down the art, we maintain the full traditional forms and philosophies passed down through generations. Our international students from Germany, the UK, the United States, and many other countries have experienced the depth of our training firsthand. Taichi is often called "meditation in motion." But at SJF, it is much more than that. It is a practical martial art, a health practice, and a philosophical system all in one. The slow, graceful movements you see are actually powerful techniques for generating internal energy, improving balance, and developing self-defense skills. When you learn Taichi with us, you are not just copying movements---you are understanding the meaning and application behind each posture.

The Core Principles of Taichi
Relaxation is the foundation of all Taichi practice. At SJF, we teach you to release tension throughout your body while maintaining proper alignment. This principle of "song" is essential for generating internal power and moving with efficiency. You will learn to identify where you hold stress and release it through mindful practice.
Separation of weight creates balance and stability. Taichi movements require you to shift your weight fully and clearly between your feet. This practice develops leg strength, improves balance, and creates the stable foundation needed for both health and martial applications.
Continuous movement without interruption. Taichi forms flow from one posture to the next without stopping. This continuous movement trains your coordination, builds endurance, and creates a meditative quality in your practice. Master Shen emphasizes the importance of smooth transitions between movements.
The integration of upper and lower body. In Taichi, your arms and legs move together in coordinated action. This whole-body connection develops coordination and ensures that power generated from your legs transfers effectively through your torso and into your hands.
Health and Wellness Through Taichi
Strengthen your body without strain or impact. Taichi provides a complete workout that strengthens muscles, improves flexibility, and supports joint health without the jarring impact of high-intensity exercise. This makes it accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.
Boost your immune system and overall vitality. Research shows that regular Taichi practice supports immune function and improves overall health markers. Students often report fewer illnesses and greater energy levels after establishing a consistent practice.
Improve your sleep quality and daily energy. Many students find that Taichi helps them sleep more deeply and wake feeling more refreshed. The combination of movement, breathing, and mental focus regulates your nervous system and promotes healthy sleep patterns.
Reduce chronic pain through mindful movement. Taichi has been shown to help with conditions like arthritis, back pain, and fibromyalgia. The gentle, controlled movements improve circulation and reduce inflammation, providing relief without medication.
Taichi Skills You Can Apply in Daily Life
Better posture and body awareness carry into everything you do. Taichi training develops an awareness of your body's alignment that stays with you beyond practice. You will find yourself sitting, standing, and moving with greater ease and less strain throughout your day.
Improved focus and concentration in work and study. The mental discipline of Taichi practice trains your ability to concentrate on one thing at a time. This skill transfers directly to your professional and academic life, helping you work more effectively and with less distraction.
Greater emotional stability and stress management. Regular Taichi practice helps you maintain emotional balance even in challenging situations. You learn to breathe through stress and respond calmly rather than reacting automatically. This skill is invaluable in our fast-paced modern world.
Practical self-defense awareness and confidence. Beyond forms, Taichi teaches you principles of self-defense that build confidence without aggression. Knowing you can protect yourself if needed changes how you carry yourself and interact with others.
Find Peace Through Movement
Experience moving meditation in a beautiful setting. Our school is surrounded by natural beauty that enhances the calming effects of Taichi. Practicing outdoors, with the sounds of flowing water and rustling leaves, deepens your connection to the meditative quality of the art.
Quiet your mind through focused attention on your body. Taichi practice anchors your awareness in physical sensation, giving your busy mind a rest from constant thinking. This focused attention is a form of meditation that many find more accessible than sitting practice.
Release emotional tension stored in your body. The relaxation and movement of Taichi help release emotional stress that you may carry unconsciously in your muscles. Students often describe feeling lighter and more emotionally balanced after practice.
Develop resilience in facing life's challenges. The calmness and mental clarity you develop in Taichi practice are not limited to the training ground. You will find yourself better equipped to handle difficult situations with grace and composure.
