Taichi in China for beginners who want real health and lasting results

What Is Taichi

Taichi, also known as Tai Chi Chuan, is a traditional Chinese martial art that combines slow, flowing movements with deep breathing and mental focus. At SJF Kung Fu School, we teach Taichi as a complete system for developing body, mind, and spirit. Our school is led by Master Shen Jiangfei, a descendant of Liuhe Quan and 11th-generation inheritor of a traditional Taichi style that has been preserved through generations of dedicated practitioners. Master Shen grew up in a martial arts family and has dedicated decades to preserving these authentic teachings. Unlike commercial schools that simplify or water down the art, we maintain the full traditional forms and philosophies passed down through generations. Our international students from Germany, the UK, the United States, and many other countries have experienced the depth of our training firsthand.

Taichi is often called "meditation in motion." But at SJF, it is much more than that. It is a practical martial art, a health practice, and a philosophical system all in one. The slow, graceful movements you see are actually powerful techniques for generating internal energy, improving balance, and developing self-defense skills. When you learn Taichi with us, you are not just copying movements—you are understanding the meaning and application behind each posture.

Why Choose Taichi Training

Taichi is accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. Unlike high-impact sports or intense martial arts, Taichi can be practiced by anyone regardless of age, fitness level, or physical condition. The movements can be adapted to suit individual needs, making it an ideal practice for both young athletes and older adults seeking gentle exercise.
The benefits extend beyond physical health. Taichi practice improves mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall well-being. Students often report reduced stress, better sleep, and improved mood after establishing a regular practice. These holistic benefits make Taichi much more than just exercise.
Taichi can be practiced anywhere, anytime. Once you learn the forms and principles, you can practice Taichi anywhere—in a park, in your living room, or even during a break at work. This flexibility makes it easy to maintain a consistent practice regardless of your schedule or location.
It is a lifelong practice that continues to reward you. Unlike activities that become harder with age, Taichi deepens over time. As you continue your practice, you gain deeper understanding and greater benefits. Many practitioners continue training well into their eighties and nineties.

Getting Started with Taichi

Begin with simple warm-up exercises. Before learning forms, you will start with gentle warm-ups that prepare your body for practice. These exercises improve circulation, increase flexibility, and help you develop body awareness. They are safe and suitable for all levels.
Learn the basic stances and footwork. Proper stance is the foundation of Taichi. You will learn how to stand, shift your weight, and step correctly. These basic skills are essential for all future practice and will benefit your overall movement in daily life.
Practice short sequences before longer forms. Instead of trying to memorize a long form all at once, you will learn short sequences first. This step-by-step approach makes learning manageable and enjoyable. As you gain confidence, you will gradually add more movements.
Develop your personal practice routine. Our goal is not just to teach you during your time at SJF, but to give you the tools to continue practicing on your own. You will leave with a clear routine that fits your schedule and goals. This independence is key to long-term success.

Common Questions About Taichi

Do I need to be flexible or fit to start Taichi? No. Taichi is a practice that develops flexibility and fitness gradually. Beginners of all physical conditions are welcome. You will progress at your own pace and see steady improvement over time.
Is Taichi a martial art or just exercise? Taichi is both. It is a complete martial art with practical self-defense applications, but it is also an effective health practice. Many students are drawn to Taichi for health reasons and later discover its martial depth.
How long does it take to learn Taichi? The answer depends on your goals. Basic principles can be learned in a few weeks, while deeper understanding develops over years of practice. Taichi is a lifelong journey that continues to reward you at every stage.
Can I practice Taichi if I have injuries or health conditions? Yes, but you should inform your instructor about any conditions. Master Shen can adapt movements to accommodate your needs. Many students with chronic conditions find Taichi helpful for managing their symptoms.

The Physical Benefits of Taichi

Improve your posture and reduce back pain. Taichi training strengthens your core muscles and improves spinal alignment. Many students report significant reduction in back and neck pain after establishing a regular practice. Good posture also improves your appearance and confidence.
Increase your strength without heavy equipment. Taichi builds functional strength through bodyweight exercises and sustained postures. Your legs become stronger, your core tightens, and your arms develop endurance. This type of strength is practical and useful in daily life.
Enhance your balance and prevent falls. Balance training is a key component of Taichi. The practice improves your ability to maintain stability on one leg and recover from loss of balance. This benefit is especially valuable for older adults.
Boost your energy and reduce fatigue. Instead of draining your energy, Taichi actually builds it. Regular practice improves circulation, breathing, and energy flow, leaving you feeling more energized after practice than before. Many students report needing less sleep and feeling more alert during the day.

The Mental and Emotional Benefits

Calm your mind and reduce anxiety. The focused attention of Taichi practice gives your mind a rest from constant thinking. Students often describe feeling calmer, more centered, and less anxious after practice. This mental calmness is one of the most immediate benefits of Taichi.
Improve your concentration and focus. Taichi requires you to pay attention to many things at once—your movement, breath, and body alignment. This practice trains your ability to concentrate, a skill that benefits work, study, and all other activities requiring focus.
Develop patience and emotional resilience. Learning Taichi takes time and patience. The process teaches you to accept gradual progress and persist through plateaus. This patience carries over into other areas of life, helping you handle challenges with greater composure.
Experience greater peace in daily life. Taichi practice cultivates a sense of inner peace that stays with you throughout the day. You will find yourself reacting more calmly to stressful situations and experiencing more contentment in ordinary moments.

Understanding Taichi Forms

Forms are pre-arranged sequences of movements. Each Taichi style has its own forms, which are memorized and practiced repeatedly. Forms teach you the vocabulary of Taichi movements and help you internalize the principles of the art.
Forms can be performed at different speeds. Some forms are performed slowly, focusing on relaxation and precision. Others are performed at medium or fast speeds, developing coordination and martial application. Practicing at different speeds gives you a well-rounded training experience.
Each movement in a form has meaning and purpose. Behind every posture is a practical martial application or a health benefit. Understanding these meanings enriches your practice and helps you move with greater intention and effectiveness.

Forms are a form of moving meditation. Practicing Taichi forms requires focused attention and presence. This makes forms a type of moving meditation that is accessible to people who find sitting meditation challenging. The meditative quality of forms is one of the things that makes Taichi unique.
