Taichi More Than Just Slow Movement

What Is Taichi and Its Hidden Depths

Taichi is a traditional Chinese martial art that combines gentle, flowing movements with deep breathing and focused attention. At SJF Kung Fu School, we teach authentic Taichi in a traditional setting. Master Shen Jiangfei leads our school. He grew up in a martial arts family and is a descendant of Liuhe Quan and the 11th-generation inheritor of Chen-style Taichi. Our international students come from Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Austria, the United States, Libya, the Philippines, and more. They come to learn real Taichi, not a watered-down version.

Taichi looks easy but is surprisingly challenging. The slow movements require strength, balance, and concentration. You will use muscles you did not know you had. You will also learn to calm your mind and focus your attention. This combination of physical and mental challenge makes Taichi endlessly interesting.

What a Typical Training Day Looks Like

Morning practice starts early. You begin with warm-up exercises to prepare your body. Then you practice basic stances and movements. The morning air is fresh and cool. Training at this time of day is peaceful and energizing. You feel awake and ready for the day.

Midday sessions focus on forms. After a break, you learn new sequences of movements. Master Shen teaches each movement step by step. He explains the purpose and meaning behind each posture. You practice until you understand and can perform the movement correctly.

Afternoon training includes partner work. You may practice Push Hands with another student. This develops sensitivity, timing, and balance. You learn to feel your partner's energy and respond appropriately. This is challenging and fun. It also helps you understand the martial applications of Taichi.

Evening sessions are for review and relaxation. You practice what you learned during the day. You can also ask questions and get feedback. The atmosphere is more relaxed in the evening. Many students find this is when things start to click.
