Huangcheng Premier’s Mansion (also known as the House of the Huangcheng Chancellor or Huangcheng Xiangfu) is a massive, fortified castle-like estate located in Jincheng, Shanxi Province, China. It was the ancestral home of Chen Tingjing (1638–1712), a highly influential Grand Secretary and the preceptor (tutor) to the Kangxi Emperor during the Qing Dynasty.

Highlights

  • Dual-Era Division: The entire complex is structurally split into the Ming Dynasty "Inner City" (built in 1633 for defensive refuge) and the Qing Dynasty "Outer City" (built in 1703 as a grand bureaucratic and residential estate).
  • The Heshan Tower: A striking 30-meter-tall (100 feet), seven-story stone fortress designed to endure heavy military sieges, completely equipped with its own water well, millstones, and a maze of underground escape tunnels.
  • Honeycomb Soldier Caves: Built directly into the towering, 12-meter-high defensive walls are multi-tiered, interconnected cave systems (Tibetan Soldier Caves) that could shelter and rapidly deploy over a thousand soldiers or residents during emergencies.
  • Imperial Handwriting Tower: A dedicated architectural pavilion (Yushulou) constructed exclusively to house and protect the rare calligraphy, plaques, and imperial decrees gifted directly to the Chen family by the Kangxi Emperor.
