Manghe Natural Reserve is a pristine, national-level protected wilderness area located in Yangcheng County, southwest of Jincheng City, Shanxi Province, China. Spanning over 50 square kilometers along the southern slopes of the Taihang Mountains, it is widely celebrated as the "Green Pearl of Southern Shanxi" and a "Natural Gene Bank."
The reserve is famous for its dramatic karst topography, deeply carved canyons, limestone caves, and crystal-clear mountain streams that form spectacular waterfalls and deep pools. Because of its unique microclimate, Manghe acts as an ecological sanctuary, housing a vast array of rare plant and animal species. Notably, it serves as the northernmost natural habitat in China for the wild Macaque monkey (Rhesus macaque).
Encounters with Wild Macaques
The undisputed highlight of visiting Manghe is the chance to interact with the hundreds of wild Macaque monkeys that roam freely throughout the reserve. Unlike monkeys in enclosed zoos, these intelligent creatures live naturally in the limestone cliffs and forests. Visitors can observe them swinging through the trees, grooming each other, and playing near the walking paths. Specialized viewing areas allow for safe, up-close encounters and fantastic wildlife photography.
A Landscape of Waterfalls and Canyons
Manghe is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. The reserve features a winding, well-maintained boardwalk trail that snakes through a deep gorge following the path of the Manghe River. Along the route, visitors will encounter stunning geological wonders, including the Wangmang Ridge, towering karst peaks, hidden caves, and a sequence of cascading waterfalls. The water here is incredibly pure, radiating brilliant shades of emerald green and turquoise.
Ancient Plants and Autumn Colors
The reserve is densely covered in ancient forests, boasting rare tree species like the Cornus officinalis (Asiatic cornelian cherry) and ancient yews. Wandering through the shaded canopy offers an exceptional "forest bathing" experience with wonderfully crisp, oxygen-rich air. While the reserve is a cool summer retreat, it becomes exceptionally magical during autumn, when the entire canyon erupts into a vibrant mosaic of fiery red, orange, and golden foliage.
